Callaway wins series 4-1

Game 1 – James Edwards scored 8 points in the first period to give Callaway a 32-25 advantage after one. Danny Schayes had 10 of the Generals’ 25 points. The Kings finished the period on a 20-7 run. The 2nd quarter saw Dale Ellis score 11 points for Jacksonville and Jay Vincent 8 for the home team as the Kings went up 63-48 at the half. Edwards added 11 more and J.Vincent 9 more in the 3rd giving the Kings a 21-point advantage heading into the 4th. The margin would stand as Callaway takes game on 117-96. Ellis topped JAG with 24. J.Vincent finished with 25 points and 5 rebounds and the game MVP. Edwards ended up with 21 points and 11 boards. Callaway enjoyed a 56-34 rebound advantage.

Game 2 – Dale Ellis and Sam Perkins combined for 17 first quarter points to put Jacksonville up 33-24 at the quarter’s end. Danny Schayes tallied 7 in the 2nd and the Generals were up 59-49 heading into the lockers. The Kings clawed their way back into the game in the 3rd and then scored the last 7 points of the frame to take a 4-point advantage into the 4th. James Edwards scored 10 points in the 3rd while Rookie #1 Overall Pick, Reggie Miller, contributed 8. Callaway had a 97-91 lead with 5:47 left on the clock. All of a sudden, the Kings couldn’t buy a bucket. The Generals took off on a 20-2 run that gave them the 118-103 victory. John Bagley scored 16 of his 18 points in the 2nd half, 11 in the 4th quarter. He also had 12 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals to take home the game ball. Ellis finished with 23 and Perkins 20. Edwards and Terry Cummings each had 18 to lead Callaway.

Game 3 – The playoff series between the Kings and Generals has featured runs by both teams. Game 3 at the Thunderdome was more of the same as the Kings went on a 24-4 run to end the 1st quarter to give them a 34-15 lead.  The Generals went on a mini-run at the beginning of the 2nd quarter and were able to cut the Kings’ lead to 60-48 at the half.  Jacksonville got as close as 9 points in the 2nd half but could not pull any closer.  Callaway takes a 2-1 game lead in the series with its 133-120 victory.   The Kings 55% to 38.5% shooting from the field and 55-38 rebound margin proved too much of an advantage for the Generals to overcome even with their excellent 22-26 shooting from the free throw line. Dale Ellis just missed a double-double with his 30p/9r performance with Chuck Person also having a nice game with 18p/7r/9a.  The Kings were led by Game MVP Reggie Theus who had 13p/5r and a 20/2 assist to turnover ratio. Rick Mahorn added 22p/9r.

Game 4 – Jacksonville hosted game 4 of the playoff round 1 series vs Callaway hoping to tie series at 2-2. Danny Shayes started hot from the floor and free throw line scoring 14 1st qtr. points, However Person and Perkins got into early foul trouble and the Kings were able to stretch out their 37-29 1st qtr. lead to 20 pts at one point in the 2nd quarter with Theus, Miller and Sundvold all reaching double figures in the 1st half with the Kings team shooting 60% from the floor . The Generals were able to cut into the lead to make it a 71-56 score at the half. The Generals came out fired up at the half, determined to make a game of what looked like was going to be a laugher. Jacksonville clamped down on defence while featuring a balanced attack to pull within 1 pt. at 91-90 at the end of 3 qtrs. of play. The home crowd went wild when Ellis hit a 3 for the 1st score of the 4th qtr to give the Generals their first lead since early in the 1st qtr. With the Kings bigs getting out of their funk, they retook the lead and stretched it to 7 pt. at 118-111 with 4:56 left in the game. Ellis and Shayes led the Generals on a comeback to pull the game back within 1 at 1221-121 with 3:07 left. The Kings responded with a 10-2 run in 2 minutes then hung on despite some nervy foul shooting to claim the 137-129 win. Shayes (30p/10r) , Ellis (30p/10r/5s) and Perkins (18p/13r) all finished with double doubles with Schayes going 14-15 at the charity stripe. Ellis pulled down 8 offensive boards. Cummings (31p/14r} was named MVP regaining his touch after poor shooting in the 2nd and 3rd Qtrs. The unlikely hero for the Kings was Sunvold who only missed 3 shots in his 25p/8a performance. The series now heads back to Callaway with the Kings holding a 3 games to 1 lead.

Game 5 – Richard Anderson scored 12 points for Jacksonville in the first frame, but it wasn’t enough for the Generals to take the period. James Edwards had 8 to top the Kings and they were up by two, 30-28. Callaway opened the 2nd period on an 18-2 run and Edwards tacked on 13 more points and the home team was up 69-54 at halftime. Already up 85-70 with just under 4 minutes in the 3rd, the Kings took off on another run, 14-2, to put this one on ice and advance to the 2nd round of the playoffs. Edwards had 16 points in the 2nd half for a game-high 37 points to go with his 12 rebounds. He was named Game MVP. Terry Cummings and Jay Vincent each contributed 18 points for CWK. Dale Ellis led JAG with 22. John Bagley chipped in 16 points, 10 assists and 3 steals.
