Game 1 – The Callaway Kings kept the game tight for the first 5 minutes, but then the Fresno machine got rolling, gathering steam and increasing the lead each quarter.  Fresno’s combination of fast break points (34) and free throws (26-31) overcame a relatively poor shooting performance from the floor(46%) with their set offense. The Kings were held to shooting 42% and were out-rebounded by a wide margin with so many missed shots. Magic Johnson was named MVP with 27points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds. Doc Rivers added a 27 point/7 assist night. Jay Vincent scored 16 and Terry Cummings had the Kings’ highest game score with 14 points and 11 boards.

Game 2 – The Kings were thinking “here we go again” as Terry Cummings gets whistled for 2 fouls in less than 2 minutes at the start of the game. Fresno led 38-28 after the 1st qtr. But this game the Kings were able to rally and outscore the Stars in both the 2nd and 3rd qtr. and used an 8-0 run at the end of the 3rd qtr to take a 90-89 lead.  The Stars outscored the Kings 10-2 in the last 2 minutes  of the ball game to take a 2-0 series lead. Callaway was able to keep close as Fresno was not hitting their FT this game (26-43). Patrick Ewing was held to 4 pts through 3 quarters and Jerome Kersey was in foul trouble most of the game, limiting his court time to 12:32. Alvin Robertson was named MVP with 28 points, 5 boards and 9 assists, missing only 3 shots from the floor. Magic Johnson was stellar with a 28 pt/10 reb/9 a performance.’ James Edwards had 26 points and 9 rebounds to lead the Kings attack.

Game 3 – Both teams got off to good offensive starts in the first quarter, shooting 50% or better.  The difference was Fresno made 11-12 free throws while Callaway made 2 of 2.  This gave Fresno a 35-26 lead after one.  Fresno extended its lead by 3 in the second, taking a 68-56 lead into halftime. Patrick Ewing powered Fresno with 21 points and 8 rebounds, supported by Magic with 17 points and 5 assists.  Jay Vincent led Callaway with 17 points off the bench.  Fresno stormed out of the lockers with a 41-29 third quarter to take a 109-85 lead heading into the fourth.  The Stars continued their roll with a 29-23 fourth quarter to take the game 138-108.  Magic led Fresno’s scoring with 32 points, including 13-13 from the free throw line.  Ewing was one point behind with 31.  Vincent led Callaway with 23 points, supported by five others who scored in double figures, including Reggie Theus, who scored 17 and dished out 9 assists.

Game 4 – A very high-scoring first quarter ended with Fresno on top 40-32.  Alvin Robertson led Fresno off the bench with 9 points, while Callaway countered with a very balanced attack.  The offenses continued to lead the way in the second.  Fresno took the quarter 35-34, but four Stars battled foul trouble: Magic Johnson, Jerome Kersey, Patrick Ewing and Robertson.  Similar to game 3, Fresno burst out of the lockers to take the third quarter 44-29 and take a 119-95 lead into the fourth quarter.  Fresno’s fast break led the way, going 19-22 for the game thus far.  Fresno stepped on the throttle in the fourth, finishing the game with a 147-109 win.  Robertson scored 40 off the bench to go with 11 assists.  James Edwards led the Kings with 21 points, supported by Terry Cummings’ 18 and Bobby Hansen’s 16. Fresno advances to the Eastern Conference Finals for the third year in a row. Congratulations to the Callaway Kings for tying the record for 7 appearances in the VBA Playoffs.
