Game 1 – The teams squared off on April 30, 1990 at Chandler Square Garden. Callaway came to play, scoring 14 of the game’s first 20 points and riding that wave to a 46-32 first period. Terry Cummings had 9 of those first 14 points and finished with 20 for the period. Chandler would cut the lead to 4 points with 3:54 remaining in the half before the Kings stretched back out to 73-63 when the teams headed to their lockers. Derek Harper led the Wolves’ comeback with 13 second period tallies. In the 3rd, the home team would trim the lead to 4 again before CWK retaliated and headed into the final frame with a 12-point advantage. Cummings added 12 more to his total in the third with his teammate Reggie Miller getting loose for 11. Brad Daugherty countered with 13 for CHW. Callaway wouldn’t let Chandler get any closer than 7 points in the 4th, winning game one on the road, 139-128. Cummings finished with 41 points and 10 boards to earn game MVP honors. Miller chipped in 30. Daugherty scored 27 and had a game-high 12 rebounds for Chandler. Harper had 20 points and 11 assists.
Game 2 – The Kings got off to a fast start in the 1st quarter again. Terry Cummings was stifled by Chandler’s “D” and was scoreless in the 1st half. Tyrone Corbin and Craig Ehlo picked up the slack. Chandler rallied in the 3rd qtr., but Callaway righted the ship in the 4th. Both teams shot well with Wolves having 6 players in double figures. The Kings hit 7 of 10 3 point shots. Corbin finished with 45 points and 12 boards to earn MVP honors. Reggie Miller chipped in 30 and Ehlo finished with 21. Charles Smith led CHW with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Derek Harper tallied 24.
Game 3 – The Chandler Wolves found themselves down 2 games to none heading into the Kingdom City Crown Center. It didn’t help that the Callaway Kings jumped out to a 33-15 advantage en route to a 42-25 first quarter. The Wolves only shot .345 from the floor compared to the home teams’ .484. Terry Cummings led all scorers with 12 points. Cummings tallied 10 more in a 29-29 second period as CWK enjoyed a 71-54 lead at the half…. Callaway coasted to a 58-39 second half to take a 3-game lead in the series with the 129-93 rout. Chandler managed to shoot only .336 for the game which makes it very difficult to win. Bernard King’s 17 topped the Wolves. Cummings was named MVP of the game with 24 points.
Game 4 – A determined Chandler Wolf squad scored the game’s first 10 points, determined to get this series back to Chandler Square Garden for Game 5. The rest of the first period went their way as well as they enjoyed a 39-21 advantage after one. Charles Smith had 11 points and Bernard King 10 as CHW shot an incredible 86% from the floor. Unfortunately for the Wolves, the tables turned quickly and Callaway went on a 16-2 run to open the 2nd frame. When the first half came to a close, the Kings were sitting in their lockers with a 58-56 lead. The Reggies, Miller and Theus combined for 22 second period points. The Wolves took the 3rd quarter 31-19 and were up 87-77 heading into the 4th. But, just like they did in the 2nd quarter, The Kings came out firing in the final period; this time on a 16-4 spree that put them up 93-91. The teams stayed close until the 1:41 mark when the score was 120-116 in favor of the home team. The Kings scored 9 unanswered point on free throws before closing out the scoring hitting a 3-pointer, his first points of the game. Callaway advances to the Eastern Finals to take on either the So Cal Surf or the defending champion Fresno Stars. Miller earned MVP in this contest with a game-high 41 points. Terry Cummings (22), James Edwards (20) and Theus (21) all tallied 20+ for CWK. Chandler was led by Smith’s 29 and King’s 24.
